Sleep Reports, High Drama, and One Great Meal

Tre Lune

Years ago when I was first dating my husband, I would stumble out of bed, hours after he started his day and announce my daily sleep report.  It was and is always detailed with what time I had to pee( sometimes up to three times a night) to what noise in or outside of the house was disturbing to my restless nature.    I often zero in on something negative and let my brain get stuck there, like an old warped record.  Last night in an expensive and lovely bed and breakfast in Santa Barbara was no different.  I was rendered sleepless by various ambient noises that I now block out in my own home with white sound.  And this was no just semi-sleepless night, this was a full blown insomniac’d out, never even drift off for a moment of peace.  The trying ended with the bing of a text, it’s not like me but apparently I had forgotten to turn my cell phone off.  After living through losing both parents and waiting for the possible call, I gave up being available during the night with a phone call.  I unplug, turn off, anything to aid the possibility of slumber.

There is a huge, stay away from trigger for a person with insomnia and that is a plan in the morning.  I don’t make plans for anything, including construction on my home anytime before 11:00 am.

The bed and breakfast called for their gourmet breakfast from 8:30-9:30 which I’m sure is the reason I was rendered entirely sleepless.  No one but another person with insomnia would be able to relate to this.  I was quite determined not to miss the lemon souffled pancakes with thyme and lemon infused melon balls as the first course.  No fucking way was I losing out on this meal.  Ask me if I remember it?  I was there, I barely remember now, even though it was earlier today, gritting my teeth from anxiety and humorless.

The focul point of the large former barn room at our bed and breakfast is the big bathtub right there in the room.  My husband went out for a walk and I took a long, sleepy  bath.  I was then ready for lunch with the girls! We went to Opal at both the hotel and my friend Kayla’s suggestion.  I remember that we were there, I know we spent most of our time laughing our heads off about all of our “70’s” experiences together and separate.  I do not remember the food that well.   I do recall that Kayla’s lunch choice of grilled salmon in a curry sauce was the clear winner. I tried it and it was far better then the cobb salad I shared with my other old friend Cathy. (more…)

New York Week at a Glance

I was just in New York, celebrating both my birthday which I like to consider a national holiday and my anniversary, that I tend to consider a miracle.

The first great restaurant involved some intrigue. I’m reading the restaurant critic Frank Bruni’s book right now and one night he was being interviewed by Charlie Rose. Charlie Rose asked him what I thought was a great question. “ What are your few favorite restaurants here in New York?” There I was on the edge of my seat, couldn’t wait to hear the answer to that and suddenly Charlie Rose talks over the answer of the favorite Italian in all of Manhattan, but you couldn’t hear the answer!

When I spoke to my husband about it the next day he said not to worry that he had the interviewed tivo’d. I said you don’t understand Charlie Rose starts speaking over the answer. So my husband became a detective and played the interview over and over and actually finally read Frank Bruni’s lips to decipher what was said and he promptly made us a reservation at Convivio. Thank you to my husband and to Frank Bruni for this amazing find.

I tend to love my chicken livers and I ordered fried one served over a soft polenta.

Spectacular, perfect in that it was not too rich and polenta is sometimes over kill with the Parmesan, not this time. My husband ordered the most amazing part of the meal which were sardines and peppers served over a light mozzarella. Though the restaurant is clearly fancy, it’s not overly snooty, in fact not the least bit snooty.

Our waiter was so real and lovely and I will go back to Convivio Restaurant anytime.

Convivio Restaurant, 45 Tudor City Place. Oh and the area around here is so charming, it’s called Tudor City and I had never been there. Quite magical.

We Californians love our avocados, we do.  We might even take them for granted.  All year we are served or make guacamole.  Some of us even have our own avocado trees.

My dining room table was once my childhood coffee table.  In the 50’s and 60’s, my childhood, I sat on the ground close to the top of what was then a low coffee table, scarfing down my mom’s guacamole.  It was amazing. I was like a dog, watching over my master in danger, glaring at people and never leaving my master’s side, only it was GUACA-fuckin-mole!   She made it at the drop of a hat.  Seriously, the minute someone walked in the house, even if she wasn’t expecting company, she would march to the kitchen in a trance, not speaking, perfect hostess, stepford wife- style, to pull together some fresh guac.  If I remember correctly, and I think I do remember most of her ingredients, she would use Tabasco sauce for the heat/spice, even a touch of mayonnaise and some lemon, and of course onion and tomato.  Not sure if she used garlic but I know someone who does and she raves about her guac.  We all rave about our own guacamole.  It’ s like our own private pissing contest out here in southern California.

I am here to let you know who wins.  It’s my new self-appointed job and anyone reading this is clearly lucky because you have just stumbled on gold.  California Gold, guacamole that is. (more…)

Okay,  I can’t stop crying.  Not floods of tears, no, but it sure is coming in waves and doesn’t seem to stop.

I just left my friend’s son’s 18th birthday party.  It was sort of an impromptu event that I feel I helped facilitate.  It wasn’t that easy to produce and the cast of characters aren’t run-of-the-mill either.  No, far from it.

Lead character is of course the Birthday Boy, a little person struggling with well, if that’s not enough, compound being a dwarf with the self-loathing of all teenagers.  It’s a combustible combo.

Birthday Boy had recently confessed to his mother that his one big wish for his 18th was to be given a surprise party.   Now, for years Birthday Boy has longed to be reunited with his young childhood live-in housekeeper/babysitter and her kids, his childhood surrogate brother and sister.

That’s where I come in.  It’s where I came in 15 or so years ago when his mom and I first met as well.   That would probably be a whole different story for a whole different type of blog, but I will tell you a condensed version.  The babysitter/housekeepers, hers and mine, met either on the street or in a park.  We speak Spanglish so it’s sometimes hard to get the stories straight.  I kept hearing about their adventures by day, the babysitters taking our young kids to haggle in English for them at local yard sales that they called “yardas.”  Birthday Boy’s mother and I were destined to meet because we now shared the same extended family.  Good thing when we met, we instantly liked each other. Nice Matin

The great thing about New York and lets face it everything is great about it, is that you pretty much have to or should walk to your destination.  And by destination,I mean restaurants of course!  After that long walk, sometimes many blocks, you will be rewarded by the spectacular food.  And when I say “food” in New York, I’m talking about bread, no comparison to any bread I’ve ever had in L.A.

Bread server just came by and I’m always greedy so I ask for one of everything, and then I often have them hunt for the heel.  Runs in the family, my dad was keen on the heels and would ask busboys to go fetch “the end” as he called it, from the kitchen.  Okay, breads not killing me today which is probably  good (better for my health) because I can really scarf down the bread and butter.  I’m thinking maybe this isn’t the day for the freshest bread but what I always like about Nice Matin is that you don’t have to ask for butter.  It’s automatically served. Granny’s Diner

Monday, August 10th, 2009

granniesrestaurant

I’m not the kind of person who keeps tons of framed photo’s on display around my house.  I do however have this one of my Granny’s diner on display.  I really don’t know much about the origin of the picture, so it could have been her diner or she might have just worked there.  What I do know and remember about my grandmother who we called Granny is her cooking.   If I talk about her, it’s only to say she made the best buttermilk biscuits I have ever had.  I’m not even sure if they’re called buttermilk biscuits or baking soda biscuits.  For a few years I made them every single day, I am prone to food fads and will love something so much that I need to eat it every day.  I’m sorry to say I lost this recipe, if I ever find it again, I will share it on the recipe page.  The smell of bacon and a hot oven with those biscuits baking in it is my strongest if not my only memory of my granny.  And I’m pretty sure she dunked the biscuits in the bacon fat before she baked them.

I love all the great restaurants but one of my favorite things to do is find an old great diner in a small town and have a surprisingly wonderful meal.
